Catch

When you knock, I turn away

When you run, I hurry to chase

As you ask, “Tell me what’s wrong?”

I cringe and try to dissolve

You forgo my morning kiss, I begin to lick my wounds

We are playing tug of war

Except when you pull, I let go

When I tug, you release

What we are playing is a miserable round of tug of war

Perhaps this game we play is better labelled ‘Catch’ because we both reach out and retract in a steady dance, never quite catching and being caught long enough to work things out.
